Creating Magic With Candles
If you’ve ever made a wish and blown out a candle on your birthday cake, you’ve participated in a very ancient form of candle magic.
The tradition of placing candles on birthday cake began long ago. Early Greek citizens used to place lit prayer candles on cakes to make them glow like the moon. Today, it is thought that these early people believed that the smoke from the blown-out prayer candles released their magic and carried their prayers to the gods.
That’s right. Even when you were a small child, you were putting your desires out to the universe and working your will.
So, now that you know you’re already a pro at the ancient, but simple art of candle magic, what if you want to do more than just make a random wish over a cake and hope that it comes true? How do you add more power to the candle magic?
It’s simple. You need, first, to understand the three principles of magic: desire, visualization and meditation. I know…I just told you that you were a pro, but just in case you need a refresher, I’ll break it down for you.
- Desire: Identify what it is you want to happen or what you want to receive. In short, identify a goal.
- Visualization: Close your eyes and see your goal becoming reality in your mind’s eye. Depending on how good you are at visualization, this might take a few minutes and maybe some practice.
- Meditation: Once you can clearly see it happening in your mind, meditate or focus your will power on making your goal a reality. Think about things you can do to achieve your goal.
Gathering Candle Magic Supplies
Luckily, creating a more irrepressible magic with candles is easy. It doesn’t require an elaborate ritual and the tools you need to perform candle magic are inexpensive and easy to find.
Big candle, Little candle, Red candle, Blue. Which of these candles is right for you?
I know, I know…don’t give up my day job. Okay then, read on.
When creating candle magic, you should never use a candle that has been burned before. Used candles tend to pick up energy from their surroundings and may lead to an adverse or unproductive outcome if used in candle spells.
Since many candle spells require that you meditate on your goal until your candle burns out, the size of the candle you use depends on how long you can stay in an effective meditative state. For me, that’s about five minutes. Just kidding…it’s more like seven minutes…give or take. The point is, if you use a large candle in your candle spell, it can be distracting if you’re counting the minutes waiting for it to burn out, and if you’re distracted, you’re not effectively meditating.
Birthday candles are a great choice when you are seeking candles that burns down more quickly than others. For those of you who prefer a little longer meditative time, chime candles may be the right one for you. They are around 4″ tall and 1/2″ in diameter and burn for an average of 2 to 2 1/2″ hours. Some spells call for a more specific type of candle, such as a seven-day jar candle or a candle with a particular shape, sometimes called a figure candle.
Candle spells often use color magic by using a candle of a specific color. So if you’re going to do a lot of candle magic (and most dedicated practitioners do), it a good idea to keep candles of varying sizes and colors around. And who knows? You never know when you might need them during a storm! Candles are, oh so handy.
The color of the candle will typically correspond to specific meanings, some of which are shown below.
- Yellow: Persuasion and protection
- Red: Courage and health, sexual love and lust
- White: Purity and truth*
- Pink: Friendship, sweet love
- Gold: Financial gain, business endeavors, solar connections
- Light Blue: Health, patience and understanding
- Dark Blue: Depression and vulnerability
- Orange: Attraction and encouragement
- Brown: Earth-related or animal-related workings
- Purple: Ambition and power
- Black: Negativity and banishment
- Silver: Reflection, intuition, lunar connections
- Green: Financial gain, abundance, fertility
*Note: Since the color ‘white’ possesses all of the colors of the spectrum, it makes a perfect “blank” candle that you can use to create candle magic when you are not sure which color you need.
There is such a wide variety of candles on the market today that you should have no problem finding the right one for your specific needs.
So, What’s next?
Okay, so you’ve selected your candle based on your needs and the requirements of your candle magic spell. Where do you go from there?
Many people like to ‘dress’ their candles before burning them. It is believed that it helps to imbue the candle with their own energy. Others believe that it helps them mentally prepare for giving control to their sub-conscious mind. To accomplish this, they oil their candles with natural oils. If you choose to oil your candle, concentrate on the purpose of your spell as you spread the oil onto the candle.
There are different methods for oiling a candle. Some traditions believe it is important to start spreading the oil from the top of the candle and then work their way to the middle, then to move to the bottom of the candle and work their way back to the middle. Other traditions apply the oil from the middle of the candle and work their way towards each end. Choose whichever method your tradition requires or whichever one feels right for you.
Spells often call for specific herbs to be used in rituals as well. If this is the case, you can roll the oiled candle in powdered or ground herbs until it is fully coated.
All dressed up and no place to go
Now place your dressed candle in a safe and stable candle holder and light it. Be sure to place it in an area where it can’t be accidentally knocked over. I promise…It really won’t increase the magic’s potential if you perform the ritual over a burning throw rug or curtains.
Now your candle is fully dressed and is crowned with a happy little flame. What more could the best dressed candle in the world want?
If they’re not written down, they’re just dreams.
There is great power in written words. When you write down your goals or desires, you automatically focus your full attention on them. It’s almost impossible to write one thought and think another at the same time.
Parchment Paper (No, not the baking kind)
The best medium to use with spell writing and casting is writing parchment, a very thin material that is traditionally made of sheep skin. Use a piece just big enough for you to write your goal down on it. Don’t worry. If you don’t want to use true sheep skin parchment, an alternative parchment is acceptable.
Some people prefer to use special inks and quill pens to write with. This lends to the authenticity of the spell, but it is not absolutely necessary. The more authentic a spell feels to you, the more energy you’re going to push into it, thus the more powerful your spell is. However, a regular ball point pen or a pencil will work fine if that’s all you have. Once you’ve written your intent down, fold the paper up while visualizing yourself achieving your desired outcome.
Double, Double, Toil & Trouble
Many candle magic spells include an incantation that the spell caster is supposed to recite during the ritual. If it doesn’t, you can write one yourself if you want to. It doesn’t have to be complicated or beautifully poetic, so don’t worry if you’re not Shakespeare or Edgar Allen Poe. It just needs to include your intent.
It is best to try to make it rhyme if you can. Rhyming tends to help keep the thought in your mind. It’s kind of like getting a song stuck in your head that subconsciously replays over and over till you want to throttle the person who started it! Oh…sorry. Got carried away a bit there. My bad.
If you do want to recite an incantation, now is the time to do it. When you’re done, or while you’re speaking, carefully hold the corner of the folded parchment over the candle flame till it catches fire. Hold the paper as long as you can, without getting burned, then place it in a fireproof container or cauldron. As you watch the fire consume the paper, visualize yourself achieving your goal.** (Are you starting to get the point that visualization is a very important part of spell casting yet?)
Meditation, The Gateway To Freedom
Once the paper is completely consumed by the fire, this is when your meditation time truly begins. Sit quietly in a comfortable position. (You may use soft, meditative music during your rituals if you’d like.) Do not lie down because you might fall asleep and falling asleep with a candle burning is not safe. Close your eyes and relax. Breathe in slowly through your nose and release it slowly through your mouth. Continue to visualize your goal becoming reality. Continue meditating until the candle burns out or until you feel you’ve meditated long enough
If you decide to stop meditating before your candle has burned out, continue to allow it to burn until it burns out on its own. Once the candle has burned out, you need to dispose of it. The best way is to bury it outside, but if that is not possible, you can dispose of it in whatever way you wish.
Now that you’ve learned how to create candle magic, think about all the things in your life that you’d like to see improved and give it a try.
**Note: Burning parchment paper during a ritual should be planned for and safety should be of the utmost importance. Please make sure you have a fireproof container nearby in which to place the burning paper. Also, remember to take the proper precautions with the ashes as well since they could still be smoldering when you can no longer see the flames.
